HardChargers

Hard ChargesDescribed as “Dirty blues from Belfast”, the band formed in late 2009, with a strong selection of original songs, forming the bulk of the band’s live sets. The HardChargers music is raunchy, exciting, provocative and honest, ranging from down-home washboard/resonator/double bass workouts, to a heady blend of twangy electric blues and roadhouse style rock, complimenting their original output with unique arrangements of prime cuts by trailblazers such as Son House, Elmore James and Lonnie Mack.

“High-octane and close in pitch to those very early Fleetwood Mac records”… “May even prove to be a collector’s item”… “Suitably manic and certainly one to clear the cobwebs”, describing the original songs as “worthy comparators to the Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters covers”
Blues Matters

In particular, Louis Jordan, Big Joe Turner, Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Roy Brown, but have adopted a harder and more aggressive approach, synonymous with modern blues artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Mike Henderson which helps create their own high energy sound.

Harrison KennedyLafayette, Hamilton, Canada

harrison1Harrison Kennedy was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, before moving to Detroit to join up with the Chairmen, a group started as part of the new Holland-Dozier-Holland label Invictus/Hot Wax.

In the mid-’70s, Kennedy left the group and struck out on a solo career. Over the years he has been able to pull from styles as varied as Funk, Soul, R&B, Folk, Country, and Gospel. Kennedy has been nominated for four Canadian Juno Awards in the blues category.

Cedric-Watson-wall

One of the most noted young talents to emerge in Cajun or Creole music in the past few years, Cedric Watson is a fiddler, vocalist, accordionist and songwriter of seemingly unlimited potential. Cedric has been making a name for himself reviving old Creole fiddling styles, injecting a healthy dose of his own personality and ingenuity, and bringing them to an ever-broadening audience. All 3 of his CD releases since going on his own have been Grammy-nominated, an indication of the excitement around his emergence as a band leader.

Cedric Watson has played with some of the great family names in Creole music, including Dexter Ardoin and the Creole Ramblers and Jeffrey Broussard and the Creole Cowboys, and most recently was a featured member of the Pine Leaf Boys. He has played across the United States in Europe, Asia, Canada, and the Caribbean, where he has a particularly keen interest in connecting Louisiana Creole music to other Creole cultures.

Moving with ease between fiddle and accordion, and adding his strong blues-inflected vocals, Cedric’s creative style and obvious joy in playing make him an engaging and exciting performer.

The Selwyn Birchwood Band Florida

Friday 4th September

Selwyn Birchwood BandIn 2013, Birchwood catapulted from local hero to shooting star. He won the world-renowned International Blues Challenge, beating out 125 other bands from the U.S. and abroad. He also took home the Albert King Guitarist Of The Year Award. It wasn’t long before Alligator Records president Bruce Iglauer offered Birchwood a contract. His debut album, Don’t Call No Ambulance, is a fully realized vision of contemporary blues. Birchwood’s original songs range from raucous romps to hill country stomps, from searing, serious slow blues to modern blues rock. Between his uninhibited sense of fun and adventure and his serious-as-a-heart-attack musicianship, “Don’t Call No Ambulance” is a window into the future of the blues. “All originals and no filler,” he says of the album. “It’s that genuineness of emotion in the songs that people can hear.”

“Selwyn Birchwood is an indelibly modern and original next-generation bluesman; his tough vocals, guitar and lap steel touch on classic Chicago blues, Southern soul, and boogie.”  –Washington Post

“A powerhouse player and emotive performer…his band, his material and both his skilled guitaring and soulful vocals are the essences of fully-formed. Birchwood is a major player. Highly recommended.”

The Dana Fuchs Band New York

Sunday 6th September

Dana Fuchs BandAll Dana Fuchs has to do is sing. All it takes is one note from those celebrated lips and clocks stop, crowds snap to attention, hearts beat like bass drums and neck-hair tingles. It’s often been said that the Florida-born front-woman could sing the phone directory and still hold her listeners spellbound. True enough, but in 2013, when Dana applies that extraordinary voice to the classic songs from her third album Bliss Avenue, you’ll realize that you’re in the presence of once-a-generation greatness.

“… Dana Fuchs offers a virtuoso demonstration of primal blues-rock vocalizing in service to feelings of betrayal, lust and longing … Fuchs often unloads vocally with Plant-ian authority. Yet the nuanced southern soul groove of her slinky, horn-inflected “Summersong” kiss off and her acoustic-based, shimmering soul ballad “keepsake” show a singer-songwriter who can bring home bittersweet reflective musings as credible as she can rage at the heavens. Sonically, she and co-producer/guitarist Jon Diamond let it roar, hot and unyielding across the channels…. Love To Beg is awe inspiring …”

– The Absolute Sound Magazine USA

“To look at, Fuchs is willowy flower-fairy with a head of Titian curls, like a wayward Joss Stone. Her voice, though is juke-joint dirty and illicit, evoking Joplin, Jagger, and a fag butt bobbing in a glass of bourbon …  She’s backed by a superior wingman and co-writer in Jon Diamond, a session veteran and soulful slide guitarist who turns co-writes like “Nothing’s What I Cry For” and “Golden Eyes” into Scorching, muscular grooves. Naturally, the blues police will say she isn’t sufficiently grizzled, road-worn or male enough for serious consideration. Fuchs the lot of ‘em.”
